Couplings

In the terminus station the locomotives have to be separated from the trains. In the goods station waggons must be fetched and parked. To make this possible 8 Herkat uncouplers have been installed. They can be adjusted in height by turning the iron heart of the electromagnetic motor.
The Arnold standart coupling is in use.

The uncoupling can only work if the vehicles stop exactly on top of the uncoupler.
A small line has been marked on the rail with a felt pen.
The locomotives have to drive with an extreme slowness. Lately this is more and more achieved by the standart models. The diesel engines V36, V60 and MAK allow slow and precise shunting operations.

Uncoupling is a mechanic procedure: The uncoupler lifts the coupling arm of one waggon over the arm of the other waggon. The train drives on. The separated waggon remains on top of the uncoupler. The Herkat uncoupler allows a precise regulation in height. The coupling of the other waggon is not to be touched.

Problems arrise:
- If the waggon couplings have not the same height. The plastic couplings must be adjusted by careful bending.
- If the boxes with the coupling springs are too large or too close to the end of the vehicle. The uncoupler may throw the waggon out of the rails. In this case the spring boxes have to be reduced by filing if this is possible. Otherwise the whole chassis must be replaced by a new one with extending coupling (without spring boxes).

Points

The point motor is turned the other way round by putting a right motor on a left point.

As the small red lever is not deep enough, the motor slides underneath. The point does not change its position.

The turned point shows the small red lever.

A thin and tiny plastic sheet is made with a cutter.

The tiny sheet is glued with the help of a pin.

The point is installed and weathered. You can see the tiny yellow sheet under the red lever.

In order to stabilize the point motor, a support is installed and adjusted with the help of grey and yellow sheets.

The installed motor is in a perfect horizontal position. It works reliably.

The camouflage sheet is screwed on top of the hole.

Handling characteristics

My Roco 23115.1 locomotive had bad slow handling characteristics for shunting. I sent it with this problem to sb-modellbau in Olching. They cleaned the gear and the worms, checked the lateral rotation of the bogies and installed a motor with ironless rotor. I turned the switching board the other way round and redressed the contact sheet on top of it. Now the machine starts under 3 V. In analog operation slow shunting is now possible. In the little clip besides you can see the sb transformation in the front and the Roco 23225.1 in the back.

Playing on the 1b line

I estabished a timetable. By this way all the vehicles can be used for playing. Of course everything is free imagination but it allows running for hours. The freight train to the quarry in the valley has not yet been planned. To know the details in a PDF file, click on the small table beside.

After every uncoupler has been adjusted, the timetable operating can begin. For an optimal circulation the rails have to be cleaned. Besides the driving performances of the engines, the electric contact is essential. All wheels with tires have been replaced. All points are electrofrog. The wheels of all the vehicles are cleaned in regular intervals.

The layout plays in the late sixties. Passenger traffic requires trains for:
- Workers who have to go to the steel mills.
- Employees who want to go to the capital.
- Pupils who must join a near secondary school.
- People looking for connection with the northern line (up to Ličge).

Goods traffic removes parcels, wood, coal, agricultural machines, fertilizer, fresh products for the hotels. Later on a quarry is to be opened in the valley.
An enjoyable play on a reduced space is guaranteed!
